Dr. Serrage comments on becoming an ophthalmologist:
“I originally went to medical school planning to become a psychiatrist, but found I preferred the surgical specialties, to which we were exposed as part of our training. The first day I spent in the Ophthalmology Department, it took me about five minutes to know that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and I’ve never regretted that decision. It’s been exciting for me to have been an active participant in the tremendous advancements in cataract and lens implant surgery and the development of the whole new field of laser refractive surgery, which did not even exist when I started my career. These changes have improved people’s lives as well as their vision and being a part of it has been very rewarding for me.”
