Dr. Steidl has been practicing ophthalmology since 1995. He is a Vitreoretinal Surgeon specializing in the treatment of Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Detachment, Macular Holes and Macular Pucker. Dr. Steidl is a graduate of Brown University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Following a residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center of New York Medical College, he completed fellowship training at Harvard Medical School, at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston. Dr. Steidl is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Before joining EMG, Dr. Steidl was vice chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland and principal investigator of the Early Treatment for Retinopathy Study there. He has also been an investigator on projects involving the study of telemedicine and retinal adhesives. Dr. Steidl is co-author or co-editor of four books in the field of ophthalmology. His interests outside of medicine include music composition. He is a Juilliard School-trained composer, holding a doctoral degree from that institution. He resides with his family in Cape Elizabeth.

Dr. Steidl comments on becoming an ophthalmologist:

“I don’t remember my first introduction to ophthalmology as a specialty, but I know it was during the first few weeks of medical school. I latched onto the idea immediately and inquired about research in ophthalmology within my first few months at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York. I like working face-to-face with patients to help them with their eye disease, and I enjoy using the diversity of skills required to manage eye conditions. I also enjoy being on the cutting-edge of science using digital and scanning laser imaging equipment, lasers for disease treatment, and the latest micro-surgery to manage retinal problems.”
