Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve. It is characterized by abnormally high pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure). Glaucoma typically causes no symptoms. Yet left untreated, glaucoma can result in decreased peripheral vision and, ultimately, loss of sight. Affecting an estimated three million Americans, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S. today. It is a disease that requires specialized treatment and care.
To provide the best in care, Eyecare Medical Group has highly experienced glaucoma specialists — Samuel P. Solish, MD and Robert W. Daly, MD — both of whom have graduated from leading fellowship programs in glaucoma as part of their extensive training. Dr. Solish works exclusively with glaucoma patients and is one of the few physicians north of Boston with a dedicated glaucoma practice. These skilled specialists regularly attend international conferences to learn the latest advanced techniques in glaucoma treatment.
As part of our commitment to our glaucoma patients, EMG continues to invest in state-of-the-art technology for glaucoma diagnosis and care. Recent clinical additions include a Humphrey Visual Field Machine, for diagnosing reduced peripheral vision with greater accuracy, and an Argon laser, with technology that has proven effective for treating glaucoma — especially for patients who cannot take glaucoma medications or use eye drops.
There are several types of glaucoma. The best way to detect glaucoma is through regular, comprehensive eye examinations by a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist. (A glaucoma screening that checks only the pressure of the eye is not sufficient — the only sure way to detect glaucoma is to have a complete eye examination.) There is no cure for glaucoma, but with early diagnosis and skilled care, the disease can be managed. Most glaucoma patients require only medication to control eye pressure.
