Accommodating & Multifocal Near Vision Lens Implants-Crystalens®, ReSTOR® & Tecnis® in Portland, Maine

By Bruce Cassidy, M.D.

The Eyecare Medical Group cataract surgeons were the first in Maine to offer the advanced lens implant technology of the Crystalens® Accommodating Lens Implant. The ReSTOR® Multifocal Lens Implant and the Tecnis® Multifocal Lens Implant are also available here at Eyecare Medical Group.

Multifocal & Accommodating near vision presbyopia correcting lens implants provide vision correction after cataract surgery at the full range of distances-far or distance vision, arms’ length or intermediate vision and up close near vision. Depending on your specific vision requirements your cataract surgeon might suggest the Crystalens® Accommodating Lens Implant, the Tecnis® Multifocal Lens Implant or the AcrySof® ReSTOR® Multifocal Lens Implant. These specialized lens implant designs work in a way to help you achieve your vision correction goals of being able to see at a variety of distances after cataract surgery-without being dependent on eyeglasses.  Presbyopia correcting lens implants correct both your distance vision and your Presbyopia after Cataract Surgery. For the vast majority of patients, having a Multifocal Lens Implant or Accommodating Lens Implant means that you will be able to see at distance and up close without being dependent on eyeglasses.

About Crystalens®, Tecnis® & ReSTOR®
Crystalens®, Tecnis® & ReSTOR® can be implanted as part of cataract surgery, following the removal of the cataract. Crystalens® is able to restore your eye's natural focusing ability by using a lens design that mimics the way the natural lens flexes and focuses. Tecnis® & ReSTOR® are multifocal lenses that have special optical designs that focus your vision at several distances much as bifocal or trifocal eyeglasses do. Crystalens®, Tecnis® & ReSTOR® are implanted in the identical manner as other intraocular lenses. They can be implanted after the removal of the crystalline lens using the same technique as modern cataract surgery. This means your surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis and that you can resume your normal work and recreational activities within a couple of days.

About Crystalens® TRULIGN™ Toric Lens Implant
Accommodating toric lens implants for astigmatism, such as the Crystalens® TRULIGN™ Toric Implant, are helpful for those patients who have astigmatism and wish to also correct their near vision focusing problem, as part of their cataract surgery. Typical presbyopia correcting lens implants that provide vision correction after cataract surgery at the full range of distances do not correct astigmatism. However, it is now possible to correct both presbyopia and astigmatism-with a special version of the Crystalens® Accommodating Lens Implant designed to correct astigmatism at the same time that it provides focusing. This advanced technology lens implant is called the Crystalens® TRULIGN™ Toric Implant.  For the vast majority of patients with astigmatism and near vision focusing problems, by having a toric accommodating lens implant it means that you will be able to see at distance and up close without being dependent on eyeglasses.
