Quick Tips for Better Computer Readability
In addition to the text size tool above, we have collected some tips and tricks for changing text size on web sites.
Some of these methods will work differently depending on your web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera, etc.)
Please note that enlarging text size and zooming in and out may change the web page’s design proportions or looks and some may not work if the site is built with Flash or images instead of text.
PCs
PC users can hold down the Control key and use the wheel on their mouse to zoom in and out.
Go to the menu at the top of your browser, select View and choose a larger text size.
In Internet Explorer 7, you can use the zoom feature on the status bar located in the lower right hand corner. Clicking on the magnifier icon will increase the zoom level.
To change font size on your screen across any of the applications you use, not just website viewing, you can right click anywhere on the computer screen, choose Properties from the popup window and change the font size on the dialog box Display Properties. Choose the Appearance tab and increase your DPI or font size. You can also choose a different, more easily readable font for Windows menus, icons and other tools. Once you click OK, Windows will change the settings automatically or the settings will change after restarting your computer.
From the Settings tab go to the General tab of the Display Properties dialog box, click on the Advanced button and customize the size of the DPI setting. In Display Properties, the settings will automatically change once you click OK, or after rebooting.
Macs
Go to the menu at the top of your browser, choose View and then choose Make Text Bigger.
You can also change text size by simply holding the Command key down and hitting the minus - or plus + keys on your keyboard.
Go to Preferences, choose Appearance, and choose fonts and font sizes.
Screen Magnification Software
Screen magnification software programs enlarge and enhance whatever is on the screen, including text and icons, but don’t change the content. The programs run in the background and don’t actually change font size. So when you print out your document, the printed document is not enlarged. Some programs run from a USB Memory Stick and can be plugged into any computer to run automatically. Do a Google search for Screen Magnification Software to see what’s available and what’s best for your needs and budget. There are also some free software programs available, including Magnifying Glass 3.3.1, a cross-platform tool (http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/).
Monitor Magnifiers
Glass magnifiers are available that fit over a computer monitor, available online from specialty dealers and sites like Amazon.com.
